Artist's Comments

I got it in my head to travel north of my home the other day to shoot some photos around sunset in an Amish community.

I believe I got the "Thumbs Up" because I respected the Amish wish not to have their faces photographed. The couple in the front new I'd been taking pictures of the buggy, but from a distance.

The young lad in the back waved at me each time I passed the buggy.

Wow...You have an Amish Community over there.
It must be another world.

Good photo.

Yes, a different world! It's weird seeing horse-drawn buggies juxtaposed against automobiles on the roads. The community is pretty far away from civilization, though.

Thanks! I took only 8 or 10 photos that evening, and I liked this one the best. I think I'll go back soon and spend the day on foot, photographing what I can.

Thanks so much for the :+fav:, too.

This week a college of mine asked me i knew those people who where still living without electra and driving horse and wagon instead of cars and wearing all black clothes with those heads on... I couldn't come up with the name at that time but later on in the evening my girlfriend came up with it: Amish...
And now you show me a nice photo of them in a horse and wagon :D

Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

:D I think I'm going to spend the day up in their community soon just walking the roads and taking photos. Driving around just doesn't cut it, and the thought of sitting in my car waiting for a shot doesn't appeal to me (seems kind of "touristy").

Sometimes, if they're in the mood, the Amish will let you take a photo or their kids - if you ask nicely. Maybe that'll happen. I figure if I'm walking everywhere up there, maybe that will help gain their trust.
